Park City Black Girls Flag Football Team Secures Huge Win

On Monday night at Dozier Field, the Park City Black girls flag football team maintained their impressive unbeaten record by defeating Cottonwood 37-0. The decisive victory marked their fifth consecutive win of the season, with all wins achieved by double digits.

Strong Leadership and Coaching from Brandon Heaney

The team is led by head coach Brandon Heaney, a former Brigham Young University football player. Heaney praised his team’s growth during their second season, stating, “From year one to two, the growth we’ve seen has really played out in the field with the discipline, awareness and understanding of football. It’s been really cool to watch.”

Heaney also coaches the Park City Red and White teams and highlighted the significant turnout during tryouts in May, with about 50 girls coming out for the team. The program draws players from Wasatch Back schools, as there are currently no other girls flag football teams in the area.

Expanding Participation and NFL Investment

The Utah High School Girls Flag Football Association includes 18 teams, but the sport has not yet received sanctioning from the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Interest in girls flag football continues to grow nationwide, with NBC’s The Today Show reporting that the NFL is investing millions in the sport, now played by hundreds of thousands of girls across the country.

Player Insights and Team Development

Junior quarterback Savannah Ramsey has noticed significant improvement in the squad. “Seeing the development of our team from last year to this year has been really awesome,” Ramsey said. “It’s just gotten so much stronger. We all have come from different sports and put our athleticism into it, and it’s been super fun to see the team come together and go undefeated so far.”

Ramsey noted that her own mental game has matured, and she values the opportunity to play alongside her younger sister and other newcomers. She and Heaney encourage more high school girls in the Wasatch Back region to consider joining the team, emphasizing the valuable skills learned and the positive team community.

Rapid Growth and Future Aspirations

Heaney pointed to the methodical offensive approach and discipline as keys to success for the Park City Black team. “Right now we’re just week to week,” he explained. “We’re focused on our opponents and just getting better. We have a lot to learn. Position mastery is a big part of what we’re trying to get to.”

Last season, the top Park City team reached the semifinals, and this year, they are setting their sights on capturing their first state title. The team is preparing for a regional competition in Las Vegas, where they will compete against long-established programs and continue developing their skills and experience.

Upcoming Matches and Community Support

The Park City Black team’s next scheduled game is against Woods Cross, who currently holds a 2-3 record. The match will take place at 7 p.m. on October 24 at Juan Diego Catholic. Heaney hopes the team’s success will inspire more local schools, including Wasatch and Deer Creek, to support and establish their own girls flag football programs.

“If you come to a game, it’s dynamic, fast and fun. They have all the abilities that it takes to really play at a high level on this field,” Heaney said. “We’re hoping that all the other campuses can follow this and do the same thing.”
