Ryan Coogler is on a roll, and he shows no signs of stopping. After the successful release of his latest film, Sinners, the director has already moved on to another project, Marvel’s Ironheart series. The streaming service has just shared a new trailer for the upcoming limited series in anticipation of its June 2025 premiere.
Six-episode Ironheart is the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it will feature Dominique Thorne in the lead role as Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart, the teenage artificial intelligence and engineering wunderkind, who was Tony Stark’s protégé in the comic books. Ironheart will be the last TV addition to the MCU’s Phase Five.
The series was first announced in December 2020, with a 2023 premiere date. Later, Marvel reworked its five-year roadmap, deciding to slow down the release frequency and limit the number of titles that it would release in a given year, partially in response to the fear of content oversaturation. The release date has since been moved to this summer. At the 2024 D23 convention, Marvel showed some footage from Ironheart, which it called “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center,” teasing a “grounded and grittier” show in comparison to other MCU offerings.
Ironheart’s titular character has already appeared in the MCU in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in which she got dragged into a war with Namor and his army of blue-skinned humans after building a vibranium detector while attending MIT. During the movie, Riri bonded with Shuri, as both of them were fellow science enthusiasts, and eventually built an armored suit that was similar to Iron Man’s. She used it to help Wakanda during the conflict and left it behind with the Wakandans after her peace-making plan had succeeded. She then returned to MIT.
Riri is Set to Fly Solo
Ironheart sees her several months after the events of Wakanda Forever. “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos),” an official synopsis reads.
The new series is getting a notable cast. Lyric Ross is set to portray Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich is cast as Joe McGillicuddy, Manny Montana will play Cousin John, Matthew Elam is cast as Xavier Washington, and Anji White is set to appear as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. She will be joined by Shea Coulée in the role of Slug. Jim Rash will reprise his role of MIT dean from Captain America: Civil War, which first appeared in 2016. Sacha Baron Cohen is confirmed to appear in the series, but the studio has not revealed anything about the character that he will be portraying.
The new trailer also did not hold back, with Marvel releasing the whole 2:05-minute video in one go. It begins with Riri showing up at an abandoned pizza restaurant and finding herself stuck in a gas-filled elevator with two minutes left until the poison is going to kills her. It turns out that this is an “interview” that she was invited to by The Hood. Riri receives a warning over the intercom that she will asphyxiate if she does not access a floor-mounted case with a gas mask in it. She then gets creative and comes up with her unique way to escape.
Impressed by the girl, The Hood promises to provide her with an opportunity to do something “iconic” if she joins him, which Riri cannot resist. However, before going through with her decision, she is reminded by her friends, notably by Natalie, that she does not know the new person, and it is not clear if The Hood is trustworthy. It is perhaps for the best that she was warned, since, as The Hood himself said earlier when talking about getting an autograph from her, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Marvel has confirmed that the first three episodes of Ironheart will be released on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with new episodes coming out every subsequent Wednesday. No plans for a second season have been announced, but Marvel can greenlight another round if the series is a success. In the meantime, fans will be able to check out the trailer and a new behind-the-scenes featurette to get an idea of what they can expect from the series.
Ironheart has a new director in Ryan Coogler, who is known for his films Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther. He will join the writers Christopher Yost, Monica Roth, and L.L. Koerner, who were already working on the series. The part of Riri will be played by Dominique Thorne, who many will remember from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. If both the new director and the main actor will be able to give their parts in the MCU something unique and memorable as they have done before, Ironheart might end up being one of the most entertaining shows of the franchise.
