Justin Bieber Ends Friendships, Drops Album, and Posts DMX

Justin Bieber has spoken, once again. Or rather, he posted something that had his fans and followers going to town with comments, questions, and interpretations. On Sunday, Bieber, 31, reposted a viral Instagram post that contained a video clip featuring the late rapper, DMX.

The short video went viral on the popular social media platform when it was reposted by Gassy, a Los Angeles-based marijuana dispensary. The post, which captured a particular exchange on the 2013 Iyanla: Fix My Life, features DMX, and life coach, Iyanla Vanzant, in a deep and vulnerable conversation on the rapper’s drug use and sobriety.

“You want to be a clean man?” Vanzant asks him. “No weed, no drinking, nothing? Why would I?” the New York native asked. In the end, Vanzant tells DMX, “If you stay sober, you will be a clear, pure vessel for the voice of God.” But the self-proclaimed God’s vessel had this to say, “I think I’m exactly where I need to be with God.”

Bieber posted the video on his Instagram story on Sunday. The caption-less post came with no explanation, comment, or context from him. So, fans were left to wonder, and theorize — whether Bieber was in any way making a statement about his stance on sobriety, or it was simply DMX’s quote on marijuana, which he felt was relatable.

Justin Bieber Facts We Learned in 2023: From Getting Married to Starting a Family

Bieber has never been tight-lipped about his spirituality. His strong Christian faith has been a strong part of his narrative for years now. This is also in tandem with his relationship with Churchome pastor Judah Smith, with whom he has often spoken on their shared spirituality. It’s no surprise that his faith and relationship with God have come to inform his image and growth, as he evolved from a teen pop star to a husband, and now a father.

Last year, Bieber and his wife, Hailey Bieber, welcomed their first child, Jack Blues Bieber. Since then, representatives for the singer have told the media that fatherhood has changed his priorities. “Justin’s world has shifted into a place where the things that once felt so important no longer do,” they told PEOPLE after his fatherhood. According to another report by the media outlet, Bieber has shifted focus on making music with Hailey, family life, and disassociating from friends and business relationships that do not reflect who he has become as an artist and person.

Over the past few months, some Bieber fans have been in a frenzy because they felt the singer’s face had changed. They even reached a point of making allegations about his drug use. These past posts come on the heels of the singer sharing images that have bongs in the frames. But the “Holy” singer’s reps have since cleared the air on that, telling TMZ in February that, “The recurring narrative that Justin is using hard drugs is not true.”

The representative said the singer was “in one of the best places in his life” and had become “focused on his family, his music, and getting rid of anyone and any business relationships that don’t share the same values that he does.” And since marijuana use is legal in California, the state the Biebers call home, images of the singer with bongs, as well as well-watched spark conversations, but don’t necessarily point to illegal activity.

A new album and tour?

The Instagram post could easily get lost in the feed of his over 302 million followers on the platform. But it has kept them thinking about the “Peaches” singer, while they wait for any announcement from him. That’s because, on July 11, Bieber released his seventh studio album, Swag, which is a testament to the growth the singer has experienced on his personal and career journey.

The 18-track album, which saw Bieber doing a good deal of self-reflection, featured some comedic interludes with Druski, an internet personality, with whom Bieber mimicked therapy sessions. The sessions, some of which have Bieber being more serious, while some others light-hearted, are where the singer got candid about his life and career, emotions, and some of his struggles in the public eye.

Songs on the album, which went well with critics, touched on Bieber’s past relationship, his relationship with his wife, his commitment to her, and being a parent. He’s using the music space to express himself on his transformation as a person and artist.

But with the album doing well, fans can’t help but ask when he will be touring. There are indications he could be touring Australia, but not much has been said about it. Neither Bieber himself nor Frontier Touring, which is the Australian promoter for Bieber’s tour, commented on the matter. The last word fans have heard about the speculations was from the Frontier Touring spokesperson, who responded to a request for comments from Rolling Stone, “We currently have no information regarding any Australian tour dates by Justin Bieber.”

A tour could not come at a better time, as last year, Bieber had to cancel the remainder of his Justice World Tour due to health issues. His last words on the cancellation, as fans would recall, were that he was “seriously letting the fans down.” A comeback would not only come as a win for fans, who have been patiently waiting to see Bieber on stage again, but as a breath of fresh air for the singer himself.
