Invasion Season 3: the fight for Earth reaches its breaking point

Apple TV+’s Invasion hasn’t been one of the platform’s most talked-about or visible shows, at least compared to two other recent major sci-fi releases: Silo and Foundation. It’s had a steady following, but overall mixed reviews that have sometimes described it as more frustrating than rewarding. Much of that goes back to the premiere season’s slow-burn approach, which even some diehard fans have said they’ve had a love/hate relationship with at times.

However, there’s no doubt the show has had its merits. The cinematography has always been gorgeous, while the writing and overall themes have strived for big and bold ideas, even if not all the episodes and seasons have been perfectly executed. Apple TV+ has released the trailer for Season 3, however, and Invasion could be hitting its stride.

Created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg (who has written and produced multiple X-Men films, and was an Oscar-nominated producer/writer on The Martian), Invasion had a premise that was always intriguing. Told in multiple locations around the world and from the perspective of civilians of different nationalities, Invasion weaves in elements of English, Japanese, and Pashto as it centers on an alien invasion. The effect has been a unique sci-fi story in which the global scope of the alien incursion is grounded in relatable human stories.

Season 1 was about the early days of the incursion, with the actual aliens largely taking a backseat to the emotional turmoil, interpersonal drama, and other struggles for its ensemble of characters. This rubbed some people the wrong way, as it felt like the show was eschewing the expected action-packed, alien-threat elements in favor of a more understated, intimate human drama.

That approach set the tone for the overall tone of the series. The first season ended with the alien invasion having become an inescapable reality, which Season 2 took full advantage of by dialing up the action and stakes. This new energy and sense of high stakes has given the show a new vibrancy in its second year. Humanity has now been driven into confined safe zones, with surviving people forced to adapt to a completely transformed world. The new status quo has resulted in more high-stakes situations, with more danger, death, and an overarching sense of trying to stay alive in increasingly impossible scenarios. Invasion was still deliberate in pacing and building emotional resonance in each episode, but the narrative itself had more urgency.

The third season of Invasion picks up two years later, with the threat having advanced to new, more terrifying levels. The official season premise indicates that the different perspectives will also come together for the first time, as the main characters are set to combine their skills on a high-stakes mission. This means crossing paths for the first time and uniting in a plot to break into the alien mothership. The series has so far emphasized separation and distance between these characters and plotlines, so this mission will be a major turning point for the show.

The actual aliens have also now reached their so-called “apex” form, while new, rapidly spreading tentacles have emerged, which are described as “putting them on the fast track to global extinction.” The sense of high stakes has only increased, as the resources and capabilities of all the individual characters will be needed to even have a fighting chance of protecting the future of the human race. New alliances and team-ups are promised, and new complications arise as old relationships are tested under pressure.

The returning cast includes Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the polarizing tech magnate Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Joining the main cast as a series regular is Erika Alexander.

Season 3 has the opportunity to resolve long-running character and plot threads, while also delivering on the larger-scale action and alien confrontation elements that were built up from the beginning of Invasion. That will require a delicate balance for the creators and writers, who will need to maintain the character-driven storytelling that has made Invasion unique in sci-fi, while also upping the ante with set pieces and alien spectacle.

Of course, even with that, it remains to be seen if Invasion can truly break through to the “must-watch” level. However, the new trailer and the third season’s premise do seem to point to a series that has found more confidence in its unique identity. There’s the sense that Invasion could have the potential to merge its dramatic emotional beats with the spectacle of higher-stakes action, while also giving a viewer a constant sense of urgency that can only come from a ticking clock.

The third season of Invasion will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
