Hawkins Faces Total Destruction in Stranger Things Season 5
Netflix has released a new extended teaser trailer for Stranger Things Season 5, the highly anticipated final season of the show, which will premiere later this year. The brief video is exactly what fans have been craving: a horror-show teaser of the ultimate battle between Hawkins’ favorite group of heroes and the terrifying demons from the Upside Down.
The trailer immediately sets the mood: eerie, unnerving, and overflowing with both tension and action. The Upside Down is once again seeping its way into Hawkins, with terrifying demodogs lurking in dark hallways and enemies attacking at every turn. Explosions, action set pieces, and flamethrowers abound, as does the most welcome of sights: Linda Hamilton, guns blazing, armor-clad, and ready to throw down.
Fans already know that the stage is set for Hawkins’ most epic battle yet. At the end of Season 4, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) — the monstrosity behind every horror the Hawkins kids have faced over the past four seasons — forcefully opened the large gate to the Upside Down and allowed it to bleed into Hawkins in its entirety. As the new teaser shows, Season 5 will open sometime later in the summer, and time will have leapt forward to the fall of 1987, which syncs up with the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance that set the events of Season 1 in motion.
Season 5 will consist of eight episodes, but don’t expect traditional TV hour-long installments here: each episode of the final season of Stranger Things will be feature-length.
Official Synopsis: In a world where the Upside Down has fully merged with Hawkins and the Rifts can’t be closed, our heroes (old and new) must find and kill Vecna before he kills everyone. But they don’t know where to find him, and he could strike at any time. Worse, the U.S. government has put Hawkins under military quarantine and increased efforts to hunt down Eleven, who must go on the run to survive. With the third anniversary of Will’s disappearance on the horizon, it’s only a matter of time before the Upside Down and Vecna make their move. But this time, the battle is darker, more dangerous than ever before, and the only hope is if the whole party (every ally) is together.
MAIN CHARACTERS + FAMILIAR FACES RETURNING
Most of the show’s main cast will return, along with some of the most important recurring characters. Amybeth McNulty will reprise her role as Vicki, while Gabriella Pizzolo will also return as Suzie, Dustin’s girlfriend. Jamie Campbell Bower will return as the titular villain, Vecna.
The teaser has also confirmed some of the newcomers and secondary characters that will join the Season 5 cast, including some immediately recognizable names. Linda Hamilton will play the character of Dr. Kay, alongside new additions to the cast, including Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.
Scenes throughout the brief teaser trailer were crafted to elicit both excitement and nostalgia in the Stranger Things fanbase. One moment in particular has already gained traction: Lucas and others cowering from the demo-dogs in a hallway is an instant and intentional homage to the velociraptor kitchen scene from Jurassic Park. The trailer also gives fans exactly what they need to get the chills: the sound of Vecna’s inhuman growl saying, “found you.”
The teaser trailer also hints at some very emotional moments to come, many dealing with the aftermath of Season 4. One moment shows Eddie Munson’s gravestone in the Hawkins cemetery, with the words “Burn in hell” spray-painted across it in large, block letters. It’s a cruel reminder that although Eddie sacrificed his life to save the kids in the Season 4 finale, many in Hawkins still consider him a monster. Eddie’s death in Season 4 was a shock to many viewers: arguably the most heart-wrenching death the series has seen since Bob Newby in Season 2. It will be painful for the audience to see the ramifications of his sacrifice, and the misperceptions of the town are likely to get corrected over time. Still, it’s sure to sting.
Structurally, the new season will be a talking point all of its own, as Netflix has decided to release the eight episodes in three separate volumes. Fans will likely be frustrated by the staggered rollout, which splits what is essentially one feature-length Stranger Things movie into three parts. Volume 1 will drop on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will be available one month later on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. The grand finale lands on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025, for a closing explosion of emotion.
With a release spanning over three different holidays and the end of the year, fans will be forced to talk, speculate, and obsess over every detail of the final season of Stranger Things over the holiday season. The end of Hawkins as we know it will be a long, slow drip, and in theory, will drive Stranger Things fans mad with anticipation over the holidays.
Season 5 of Stranger Things is very much more than just the end of one of Netflix’s most successful shows to date. It’s the culmination of a story that spans years and generations of characters, with fans watching and contributing as much as the creators do. Fans will undoubtedly take their love for the series to its logical, obsessive conclusion in Season 5. Theories, memes, fan debates, speculation, and conspiracies about what’s to come will all be there, but as the new teaser confirms, it’s the last time.
Time will tell if all of the Hawkins crew can make it out alive. It is certain that when the final credits roll on December 31, 2025, the Hawkins crew will have done everything in their power to end the nightmare once and for all, together.
