The Microsoft-owned software development platform GitHub has declared a major modification to its GitHub Copilot AI coding tool, which may result in higher costs for users who access its advanced AI capabilities. GitHub disclosed a new “premium requests” system in a blog post on Friday that will set rate limits for users who choose advanced AI models for complex coding tasks beyond the basic offering.
The new premium request system will impact users who employ Copilot for “agentic” coding functions, where the AI independently generates code and works across multiple files. Subscribers to GitHub Copilot can continue unlimited usage of the base AI model, OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but will face monthly usage limits when accessing advanced models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet.
Starting May 5th, users of the standard Copilot Pro plan, paying $20 monthly, will face a limit of 300 premium requests per month. Copilot Business users will be limited to 300 premium requests per month, and enterprise clients on Copilot Enterprise will receive 1,000 premium requests each month. Business and Enterprise tier changes will launch from May 12th to May 19th.
GitHub offers solutions for individuals who expect to surpass the newly established usage limits. Customers who subscribe to any affected plans can buy extra premium requests for $0.04 each. Users have the option to switch to GitHub’s new Copilot Pro+ plan. The Copilot Pro+ plan costs $39 each month while providing 1,500 premium requests along with “access to the best models,” which includes OpenAI’s GPT-4.5.
The recent change to Copilot’s pricing for its advanced AI models mirrors a similar declaration from Devin’s AI coding platform made the previous day, which hints at market movement due to the high computational power these systems demand. Anthropic’s reasoning-based model 3.7 Sonnet demonstrates superior capabilities in information verification and providing dependable code recommendations. The improved precision achieved by these models demands heightened computational power, which extends processing time and leads to increased operational costs.
The implementation of usage-based fees for premium models has not prevented GitHub Copilot from becoming a significant source of revenue for Microsoft. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated last August that Copilot drove more than 40% of GitHub’s revenue growth in 2024. According to the tech leader’s analysis, Copilot’s present business size has already exceeded GitHub’s entire revenue from seven years ago, when the tech giant acquired the company, showing a remarkable expansion and acceptance among developers.
GitHub’s launch of premium requests represents a new monetization strategy for its AI coding assistant. GitHub maintains an unlimited base model for all Copilot subscribers, but has implemented a tiered pricing system that connects the advanced feature usage directly with the cost of Copilot. Users will probably start assessing their dependency on premium features, which may lead them to modify their workflows or explore higher subscription tiers based on personal or team requirements.
This change may initiate developer conversations about the trade-off between the functionality of AI coding tools and their expenses, while developers face increasingly complex AI models that become part of their work processes. The choice made by GitHub showcases how AI tool economics are advancing while pricing strategies adapt to match the computational requirements of these technologies.
