Strange New Worlds S3: A New Era for the Enterprise
Paramount+ has released the official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, set to premiere on July 17, 2025. This comes only a few months after the official teaser trailer was released back in April and was a massive relief to fans, given that this was the first new footage of the series since last October’s New York City Comic-Con.
In the penultimate episode of the second season, we saw the Gorn invade a Federation colony world, prompting the Enterprise to respond and assess the situation. The moment has quickly become chaotic, with both sides being shot at by Federation soldiers, and as the ship attempts to investigate, several crew members and other survivors are captured by the Gorn as hostages. In the second season finale, “The Return of Archer,” the Enterprise is then given an ultimatum by Starfleet: proceed with rescuing the hostages and defending the colony, or simply pull back and let Starfleet handle it. Predictably, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) opts for the more dangerous option. The trailer picks up from here as it showcases another classic Strange New Worlds action sequence: an intense, full-on space battle between the Enterprise and the Gorn, one of several more climactic than usual for the series. The new trailer is quick to point out that the crew will be finishing this war, but new threats and new worlds are on the way.
Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will be another extension of the current storyline, but this time around, the Enterprise will be facing off against more than just the Gorn. As noted earlier, there’s still the conflict with the Gorn, which the Enterprise crew will be completing. As for new adventures, the series will feature a new primary villain, which will, by all accounts, push the crew and the new members of the crew to their limits. At its core, this is still Strange New Worlds: stories about new worlds and the crew that explores them, but this next chapter of the series will expand and push those boundaries. As promised by Paramount+, some episodes will tackle unexplored topics such as faith and duty, love and romance, classic Trek comedy, and mystery, with an emphasis on the latter two. Episodes will also differ in tone from season two and the other seasons of Strange New Worlds, with the more serious and sometimes outright intense action episodes being accompanied by comedy side adventures.
There will be new faces as well: while all the main and recurring cast members will be back, several new faces will join the Enterprise crew in season 3. There are some big names to note, the most significant being Cillian O’Sullivan, who will be joining the main cast as Dr. Roger Korby. Korby was originally portrayed by Michael Strong on Star Trek: The Original Series, although this new version of the character has more context in the Strange New Worlds universe: a renowned archaeologist, expert in medical archaeology, and the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Korby’s unexpected return on the Enterprise will certainly stir things up, not least because Chapel has, in his absence, found love with Spock (Ethan Peck).
Along with O’Sullivan, the cast will be joined by guests Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both known for their work in comedy, and will likely bring a comedic flair to the series, albeit in their ways. As teased by the April trailer, Strange New Worlds will take a more genre-variant approach in season 3 with the introduction of these new characters and the departure of some ongoing storylines. This included promises of several episodes which will focus on classic, high-stakes Trek action as well as lighter, sillier side stories. In that vein, the new trailer seems to confirm some of the sillier episodes in the upcoming season, as it includes cutaways of the crew bonding and various forms of friendship, as well as the occasional cheeky romantic subplot. These will likely include some of the lighter episodes teased by the first trailer, but this new trailer also shows the science division dealing with the mess caused by an unstable science experiment, one which had included Major Stuart Parrish (Matt Long) exploding into a cloud of green powder in one cutaway.
The last part of the trailer features a notable sequence, which is an actual comedic beat. In a well-timed sequence, Spock attempts to show Oswalt’s Vulcan character how to do a high five, doing it with one hand first, and then playing the age-old “too slow” trope on the Vulcan when asked to go “down low.” The Vulcan responds with, “Why would you do that?” To which Spock replies, flatly, “Because you are too slow.” It’s not a groundbreaking joke, by any means, but a welcome and needed moment of levity in the trailer, and a very Spock way to get back at Oswalt’s character for the joke.
Premiere and Release Date
Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ on July 17, 2025. New episodes will be released on a weekly schedule every Thursday, beginning with the premiere, until September 11, 2025. In total, the third season will last for approximately two months, or 10 weeks.
Season 4 is already confirmed for Strange New Worlds, as the show has only increased in popularity and in viewers since its premiere, appealing to not just Trek veterans and fans of the Star Trek brand in general, but more casual viewers as well. Strange New Worlds offers something for everyone in its episodic adventure, character study, and visual storytelling, and while it’s only in its second season, it has already made a name for itself as the flagship of the next generation of Star Trek content.
