World Premiere for an Original Fantasy Musical in Heber City
The Heber Valley is set to host the world premiere of “Whimsy!”, an original fantasy musical written by local playwright and artist Susette Gertsch. The production opens Thursday night at the historic Ideal Playhouse in Heber City, welcoming audiences for two weekends of family-friendly theater.
About the Production
Presented by Art Around the Square, a nonprofit arts organization, “Whimsy!” is more than just a musical – it’s an immersive experience filled with music, colorful costumes, imaginative staging, dance, and special effects. A cast of local performers of all ages brings the enchanting story to life, supported by artists, production professionals, and community volunteers.
Plot and Themes
At the core of the whimsy musical is a 17-year-old heroine who can spin light, embarking on a journey to find family and reignite her lost muse. Her quest leads her through memorable encounters, comedic mishaps with her energetic coach Aunt Hattie, and adventures that mix courage, love, and imagination.
According to Gertsch, “Whimsy!” celebrates the creative spark within everyone. “I never dreamed Whimsy’s message would be so important to young people but it’s so obvious now that we want them to attend for free. Adults will appreciate the sophisticated music, youth will find self-worth and power of freedom in ‘being who you are,’ and kids will love little Wild Child, a young star stage. The music is outstanding and we invite audiences of all ages to experience this magical first time ever production together.”
Opening Night and Special Events
Opening night will include a special red-carpet celebration. Attendees are invited to dress in themed costumes inspired by the magical world of “Whimsy!”—from steampunk and fairy characters to storybook favorites and woodland wizards. While themed attire is encouraged at all performances, it is not required. To maintain the family friendly theater atmosphere, masks and frightening or gory costumes are not permitted, as noted by the organizers.
Community Support and Ticket Information
The musical theater production is supported by funding from Heber City and Wasatch County TAP Tax revenues, Art Around the Square, and contributions from local sponsors and donors. Special ticket promotions for children, families, and youth are available, with all offers subject to seat availability. Young people are encouraged to attend free of charge, reflecting the importance of the production’s message to youth theater audiences.
